The Southern Cape Branch gets Going
On Friday 24 August another milestone in the history of the GenealogicalSociety of South Africa was reached. 10 Enthusiastic volunteers met in George and after a briefing by Simon du Plooy, chairman of the North West Branch on what it implies for the management to establish a branch the attendees unanimously decided to force ahead. The seeds for the establishment of the branch were sown by Alta Griffiths of the eGSSA at the Genealogical Workshop that took place at George during March 2012.
The Southern Cape Branch will serve George, Knysna, Mossel Bay, Oudtshoorn, Plettenberg Bay and even as far afield as Stilbaai. The conducting of meetings and other logistical matters will still be decided upon.
At the newly established branch family research is already an ongoing activity. Research on surnames such as Stewart, de Swart, Evans, the Vissers of the Sandveld, Estherhuyze and Barkhuizen is in an advanced stage. The founders of the branch is active researchers and Wilkie Barkhuizen is a member of the Barkhuizen Family League.
The chairman of the branch is Wilkie Barkhuizen, the vice chairman is Abrie de Swart, the secretary Merene Lategan and the treasurer Daan Visser.
